How it all began

The seeds for the Mitumba foundation were planted in 2002 when I discovered that the little church that my sister attended was sending funds to feed a village in Kenya. They knew of the need through a young seminary student in the village of Mitumba from a missionary that had gone to Nairobi with a group from another church. My sister’s church knew little however about the people and their needs. I contacted then Brother Jacob Mutoko with questions about the people and the needs which he answered promptly.
Pastor Jacob lived in the Mitumba slum of Nairobi went to seminary school and now is the Pastor of the Jerusalem Baptist Church in the Mitumba slum. Pastor Jacob is a full time minister and his wife helps him in his duties as pastor, she also sews clothing on a treadle sewing machine. They distribute the food that a part of our funds go to so that the sick can take their medicine that requires food be taken with. He over see’s the work at the garden that we purchased. He reports on the needs of the orphans and widows.
My sister’s church decided to raise funds for a church to be built in the slum after hearing of the people’s needs. I was not satisfied that funding food supplements was the answer. I organized a small group and we began to find ways to help the people help themselves. My sister and I purchased a two and a half acre plot for a garden to help supplement the nutritional needs and provide work for the poor. We do not give funds directly to the slum people but help with their needs.
It is my hope to go to Kenya and help improve the garden and find ways to improve the lives of the slum families.
